The Montessori Approach is a model of care based on best aged and dementia care practices and the development of an expertly prepared environment. Montessori for dementia and ageing focuses on supporting both the person and the environment which is adapted to support memory loss and independence. The result is that people living with dementia can make meaningful contributions to their community, engage in meaningful activities in addition to having the opportunity to maintain, and even restore function. The approach is flexible, innovative and grounded in research.
The approach centres around helping people living with dementia undertake meaningful tasks, and maintain independence and dignity. This is put into action across four broad areas.
Cognitive - encouraging residents to keep their memory fit through simple maths, handling money, trivia, and tactile sorting activities.
Practical Life - involving residents in practical activities around the residence - assisting in food preparation, sorting cutlery, folding towels, or contributing to other physical duties.
Social, cultural and spiritual - connecting residents with stimulation such as reading, enjoying music with song books or sheets, reciting prayers or exercise such as dancing or gardening.
Sensory - introducing a combination of physical and sensory stimulation through practical tasks such as preparing fragrant foods or spices, scented hand massages among others.
As with Montessori across early learning development, dementia care requires a well prepared environment to make residents feel safe, confident and stay engaged. In practical terms this means providing visual cues throughout the home - name cards at the dinner table, high contrast table settings, and visually descriptive cards to support every day tasks such as using the bathroom. We take care to create a safe and engaging space for residents to interact and live in.
It goes without saying that the Montessori approach to dementia care can only be delivered by appropriately trained caregivers. Our people bring together their care experience with training in the Montessori approach to provide the highest quality of care.
