In light of the upcoming Olympics, Burpengary Manor Aged Care resident, Beryl Langton, reflects on her sporting days and how she became to play both tennis and golf.
In light of the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, Burpengary Manor resident, Beryl Langton, tells us about her proud sporting days playing tennis and golf.
Beryl grew up in Yuleba, a country town 480 km northwest of Brisbane where she joined the tennis group at Yuleba Club. Beryl tells us that she used to play with friends, ‘It was enjoyable, and I loved the friendships I made,’ she says. ‘I played intermediate level within the club playing doubles and singles and I did play locally against other clubs too.’
Beryl tells us that the local club was quite social and everyone used to enjoy cooking and eating meals together. ‘One friend used to make mint slice, and another did puddling, while I used to make custard.’
Beryl said she stopped playing tennis at the age of 40 and decided to take up golf which she enjoyed playing for another 30 years. ‘I enjoyed spending time with my friends on a weekend, playing golf,’ she says. ‘I was so happy when I got my first hole-in-one on hole number 9.’
Since moving to Burpengary Manor, Beryl tells us that she likes to stay active where she can. ‘I enjoy going on my afternoon walk with another resident,’ she says. ‘Each afternoon we would go for a walk around the facility.’
‘I have a group of friends here that I live with that I enjoy walking with, some days we can’t walk so instead we sit around the table and do a jigsaw together while having a cup of tea and having a chat,’ she says.
